PROFILE Ms. Kawahara has worked for Miyoshi & Miyoshi since March 2013 as a partner and chief of the design and trademark department. After graduating with a degree in law from Keio University, she joined Fuji Bank Limited (which was Japan’s No.1 bank at that time) and gained 6 years of experience in foreign exchange at the foreign operation department. After leaving the bank she worked as a paralegal at a patent firm, but had to leave due to relocation of her husband’s job. However, this allowed her to take up the challenge of the patent attorney examination and she passed in 1988. From the following year she worked for Esaki & Associates as a patent attorney for over 24 years before moving to Miyoshi & Miyoshi. During her career at Esaki, she mainly took charge of trademarks, unfair competition and copyrights, and served as chief of the trademark department and as vice president.

At the Japan Patent Attorneys Association, Ms. Kawahara has held positions including board member, member of the trademark committee, and member of the industrial competitiveness committee; and as a member of the Japan Trademark Association, has participated in the trademark law studying committee, the international activities committee, the unfair competition committee, and the foreign trademarks committee.
